3 Reasons We Love Reclaimed Wood
As a design + build firm, we’re huge fans of reclaimed wood and here are our top three reasons why:
1. Texture
Reclaimed wood has an amazing and varied texture to it. It can add warmth and dimension to a home. There are a variety of colors to choose from: those soothing light grays like the sky after a storm to the rich browns of newly overturned soil to those deep red tones (perhaps from an old barn or maybe the redwoods of California). And, its texture is as varied as its color palette. You can find (or create) a more refined, smoother reclaimed wood or you can go raw and unaltered. There’s any combination out there to suit your specific design needs. At KK Design, texture is a paramount part of our design process. We love combining different textures within a room and marrying two textures on the outside of a home. Reclaimed wood and its ever varying, ever interesting texture always has our eye.
2. Sustainability
Trends and colors come and go. However, we don’t see the eco design “trend” going anywhere. Being green and sustainable in the way we design – inside and out – is important to us. Yet another reason to love reclaimed wood. It’s not only an attractive option, but a wonderfully eco- friendly alternative to newly produced lumber. We do our best to be sustainable in the way we build and design, and reclaimed wood gives us one more avenue to pursue just that.
3. Versatility
The final reason we love reclaimed wood so much is because of its versatility. We’ve used it as siding on homes we’ve built. We’ve used it as accents via doors or ceiling panels within the homes we’ve built and designed. And, it can even be used as a furniture option. Just like anything, you don’t want to overdo it – moderation is key. For example, if the siding of your home is all reclaimed wood, then you may not want all reclaimed wood and detailing within the interior of the home. Mixing and matching and contrasting with other materials will help create balance. And, overall, it’s a great material that works well with a variety of others, giving it the flexibility to be used in a number of different ways.
